ROCKINGHAM resident Tim Kenny wants the City of Rockingham to heed his call to install shade sails over park play equipment.

He said hotter weather and UV harmed children using the equipment.

“Its a lovely time of year, sunny, hot and fine a time to use our excellent parks,” he said.

“But due to the lack of shade, most of our parks’ popular equipment sits idle.

“Surely we can put up the shade sails over the foreshore parks, mainly around Alexandria Street and along the Safety Bay foreshore.”

“Please City of Rockingham, do more for our kids.”

He said even with hats and sunscreen, sun damage was being done.

“It’s just too hot, shade sails also keep the area cool,” he said.

“Kids can’t vote; I put them first. I don’t expect it to be done at every location, just two or three of the bigger playgrounds. How hard can it be?”

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said they got many requests for shade sails.

“It makes it difficult to allocate available funding to satisfy all community requests,” he said.

“City officers will review this request in conjunction with other requests received for possible inclusion in future year budgets.”

“Whether or not this request will be included will not be known until late April 2018.”

He said the City preferred tree canopies to shade sails.

“Currently there are nearly 20 playgrounds with artificial shade within the City,” he said.

“Overall, the City’s preference is to encourage the establishment of natural shade.

“Artificial shade is expensive to purchase, maintain, repair and replace.

“It can be difficult to shade desired areas in all seasonal sun angles, and shade sails need to be seasonally removed, stored and reinstated to avoid damages from severe weather events.”
