City weighs up waste options

Jaime ShurmerWeekend Kwinana Courier

There have been calls in the past for recycling services to go from fortnightly to weekly but instead the City will look at options for residents to request a larger 360L yellow lid recycling bin later this year.

This would provide a 50 per cent increase in fortnightly recycling capacity, Mayor Carol Adams said.

"The City will maintain the two- bin system (one green 240 litre bin and one yellow 240 litre bin) until the end of the current waste collection contract in September 2015," Cr Adam said.

"The intention at this stage is that residents who do not wish to have a bigger recycling bin will be able to keep their old one.

"Those residents who want a bigger recycling bin would then pay a little bit more for their waste charge each year."

The City presently offers four green waste and two hard waste collections each year in addition to recycling and household waste services.

In February, the City of Rockingham approved a new waste collection strategy with the option for its residents to get a bigger bin for recyclables.

Rockingham residents can also choose a smaller 120L red-lidded waste bin and a 240L green-lidded waste.
