Gabrielle JefferyWeekend Kwinana Courier

CONCERNED residents are urged to attend the Voluntary Assisted Dying Forums at Fiona Stanley Hospital and in Mandurah.

Baldivis MLA Reece Whitby said the forums would cover the End of Life Choices Law, which is set to be debated in WA Parliament later this year.

The forums are being held by the Ministerial Expert Panel, which is advising the State Government on Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation to be introduced later this year.

Mr Whitby said End of Life Choice legislation would be one of the most significant and emotional laws ever considered by the WA Parliament.

“We need to ensure all views, opinions and concerns are heard and discussed in a calm and measured way that is respectful to all,” he said.

“I strongly advise anyone with an interest in this issue to come along and have your say.

“These important forums are being held throughout the metro area and across regional WA.”

The forums will provide an opportunity for residents in the southern metro area to have their say.

“The issue of voluntary assisted dying (VAD) can be a very emotional issue,” Mr Whitby said.

“This is about whether as individuals we have the right to determine the manner and timing of our end of life if we ever face intolerable suffering from a terminal condition.

“As a member of the Parliamentary committee that recommended VAD legislation, I know there are many strongly held views.

“The important thing is to have a mature and respectful discussion based on facts.

“I personally support the right of individuals to have the freedom to make a choice but I want to make sure all views are considered.

“I will be there to ensure I am aware of the views of my local community so I am well informed when I come to vote on this issue in Parliament later this year.”
