Firefighters contain bushfire south of Perth

FIREFIGHTERS have controlled the bushfire which was threatening lives and homes south of Perth.

An emergency warning was issued for the eastern part of Anketell in the City of Kwinana on Monday afternoon.

It has since been downgraded to an advice as the bushfire is contained and under control.

The alert affects people in the area bounded by Battersby Road, Anketell Road, Tuart Road and Thomas Road, including Scovell Crescent, Lill Place and Miyak Court.

About 90 firefighters are tackling the fire, which started about 2.47pm near the intersection of Thomas Road and Battersby Road in Anketell.

Firefighters are strengthening containment lines, patrolling the area and mopping up.

“The bushfire is no longer impacting the community in this area,” the Department of Fire and Emergency Services said in the alert.

“There is no threat to lives or homes. There is a lot of smoke in the area.”

ROAD CLOSURES:

Avoid the area and be aware of fire and emergency services personnel working on site.

Thomas Road from Kwinana Freeway to Tuart Road has been reopened.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully due to smoke.
