The 10-week hand-building beginners’ classes are designed for people with little or no knowledge of ceramics.

Participants will learn the basics while creating functional items during the first seven weeks, followed by three weeks of assistance working on items of their choice.

Those with hand-building experience can opt to attend wheel throwing beginners or intermediate classes.

Instructor Lesley Barrett will take beginners through the basic skills and help intermediate participants perfect their skills and throw larger pieces.

The studio is downstairs at the rear of the Rockingham Arts Centre, 11 Kent Street.

Studio co-ordinator Bec Thomas said people with previous ceramics experience could join one of the studio’s social groups.

“These groups meet weekly for members with a basic to advanced knowledge of ceramics to come along and work on their own projects in a friendly and supportive atmosphere,” she said.

The art social group meets on Thursdays from 9am to noon from February 7.

A 10-week course will cover techniques including watercolour, mixed media, creating and using texture, acrylic backgrounds and printing, covering both abstract and realism.

Sessions are held from 6.30pm to 8.30pm on Tuesdays, starting February 5 at the Rockingham Art Centre.
