Future still uncertain

Mr Simpson recently announced that the October elections would go ahead and the normal four-year term for councillors would be upheld, despite local government reform plans.

But a bulletin released by the department this week said some metropolitan local governments ‘may be affected by the decisions regarding local government amalgamations, the timing of the proposed reforms and the processes involved’.

The bulletin said when he confirmed elections would go ahead, Mr Simpson said councillors would serve a significant term and would play a major role in shaping the future of communities and local government.
