Golden Bay dog a life saver by donating blood

A GOLDEN Bay woman is encouraging dog owners to consider pet blood donation.

Lauren Birney’s five-year-old Bullmastiff Cyrus was a regular blood donor, but recently retired.

“For the last four years he has been donating blood at WAVES emergency vet to save other dogs from traumatic injuries,” she said.

“I’d like to raise awareness for those dog owners who didn’t know that they could donate.”

Ms Birney said Cyrus loved the attention when he donated blood.

Last year after donating, Cyrus’s blood was used to save the life of another dog.

At WAVES in Success there are often patients who require life saving blood donations to help them survive.

The blood donation program ensures there is an adequate supply of blood and plasma products for any dog that may need a life saving transfusion.

The donate, dogs must weigh more than 30kg, be healthy, have an agreeable temperament, be up to date with vaccinations and heart worm prevention.
