A GROUP of Kwinana grandmothers who are bringing up their grandchildren are seeking others to join their support group.
Grandmothers Raising Grandchildren meet on the first Tuesday of every month to offer everything from friendship to advice and emotional support.
Group co-organiser Maralyn Martin said people did not understand how hard raising grandchildren as a grandparent was.
“You get your grandkids and you think they’re fine but they’re not. All the kids have got their problems and issues,” she said.
“You do get people saying ‘why didn’t you put the child into foster care?’ Well that’s because they’re our flesh and blood.”
Fellow co-organiser Kathy Webb said the challenges of being a full time parent for the second time around ranged from emotional to financial.
“There’s not much help for us, foster carers get payments, we don’t get payments,” she said.
“If all these children were within the department, it would be costing the government lots and lots of money.
“You lose a lot of friendships because you can’t go turn up to an afternoon or a card night with children.
“The schools have recognised the children and they’re getting extra help but when it comes down to the actual grandparents, that’s why we set up this group – to try and get some fundraising, to try and get the awareness out there to get grandparents respite and the help that is needed.”
If you would like to attend the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group, its next meeting will be on Tuesday September 6 at the MACC on Leasham Court in Medina.
