THOUSANDS of derogatory and illicit messages have been presented to a jury in the trial of a ‘Facebook famous’ youth facing a rape charge.

Rhian Lee Ryan appeared very uncomfortable in his seat in the dock as the second day of the trial commenced at Perth District Court.

Mr Ryan is accused of detaining and raping a 14-year-old girl he had friended through social media.

He kept his head down as prosecutor Sarah Kavanagh drew the jury’s attention to relevant messages from his Facebook Messenger pages.

Giving evidence today, Detective Geoff Hawley said there were more than 330,000 messages in Mr Ryan’s Messenger account.

He agreed many of the messages showed discussions of girls being underage, Mr Ryan requesting nudes from them and threats to obtain those photos.

A recorded interview was played to the court of Mr Ryan being interviewed by Armadale detectives.

Mr Ryan, who declined a lawyer during the police interview, was asked about his use of Facebook.

He mentioned an incident from when he was 14 that stuck with him where he said a girl had claimed Mr Ryan had ‘f****d’ her around’.

He said she then spread rumours about him on Facebook and turned people against him.

“That stuck with me – people go out of their way to talk sh*t about me for likes and sh*t,” Mr Ryan said.

“She didn’t work out so I blocked her. It’s just f****g Facebook shit – girls do whatever they have to do to get what they want.”

He said he wasn’t into it as it “wasn’t his thing”.

“They go out of their way to lie to you – girls just message me out of the blue,” he said. “I wouldn’t reply.”

He said he did not see himself as ‘a player’ but other people did and everyone referred to him as ‘Facebook famous’ on Facebook.

Mr Ryan denied he had asked for nude pictures, rather that girls would just send them to him.

“They just message me randomly all the time,” he said. “Yeah there’s been more than one they just send me nudes and stuff – there’s just too many.

“I just wake up to heaps of f****d up shit.”

Mr Ryan admits to the sexual penetration of the victim, however denies raping her, blackmailing her, physically assaulting her or holding her against her will.

The trial continues.
