THE Port Rockingham Marina development application has been approved by the Metro South-West Joint Development Assessment Panel.

The approval was subject to 16 conditions, including the proponent paying the City of Rockingham a cash in lieu payment for 368 car parking bays.

The proposed development near Rockingham Beach Road and Wanliss Street will accommodate 497 boats pens.

It will have an open pile pier connecting the shore to the breakwater, retail buildings, restaurant and bar facilities, a meeting room, offices and a five-star hotel.

Port Rockingham spokesman Ian Duperouzel said construction of the marina could start in the second half of next year.

“We have to satisfy all the conditions,” he said.

“We are also waiting for formalisation of the seabed lease. The car parking had been a stumbling block, but it’s been sorted.”

The JDAP decision constitutes development approval only and is valid for four years.
