Local police go online in the line of duty

Staff ReporterWeekend Kwinana Courier

Rockingham and Kwinana police started using Twitter on September 1 to coincide with WA Police’s new policing model.

Kwinana police Senior Sergeant Glen Willers said initial interaction with the public had been positive.

‘It is good to engage with the public and Twitter provides a platform where locals can find out what is happening in their community,’ he said.

‘We can directly interact with people and this already has led to some good results, especially on reports of hooning.’

Sen Sgt Willers said he expected Kwinana Police to further use Twitter as a policing tool.

‘We tweet about five times a day and every officer at the station has authorisation to use it,’ he said.

‘I think we will increase our usage and hopefully that will lead to more followers, which will provide us with more scope to engage with the wider community.’
