Man hospitalised after explosion at Rockingham welding business

A MAN has been taken to hospital with minor injuries after an explosion at a welding business in Rockingham.

A Department of Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said they received a triple 000 call at 1.50pm.

“We received two calls with reports of an explosion with lots of thick black smoke,” she said.

“Fire crews were deployed and it was extinguished by 2.42pm.”

She said the cause of the explosion and fire was accidental with an estimated damage bill of $80,000.

Witnesses at the scene said the man had been doing welding work on a boat when the explosion happened and that he had been taken to hospital.

Anther witness said “he was lucky not to have been killed”.
