Mangles Bay Marina development opposition group to ‘up the ante’

Stuart HortonWeekend Kwinana Courier

HANDS Off Point Peron (HOPP) have urged residents who want to see a coastal park instead of the Mangles Bay Marina Development at Point Peron to get behind their latest strategy.

HOPP founder Dawn Jecks believed the group had reached a point where “it is clear” the group’s concerns were not being heard and after “seven long years” of lobbying and participating in official approvals processes for the proposed development, the time had come to “up the ante”.

The group has turned to online crowdfunding to raise about $10,000 to employ a lawyer to advise it on any potential court challenge to the development.

So far it has raised about $2500.

“HOPP have secured a well-respected Perth law firm to advise us about a potential court challenge to the proposed (Mangles Bay Marina) development; we urgently need around $10,000 to cover the initial legal work,” Ms Jecks said.

“We have launched an online crowdfunding campaign called ‘Save Point Peron’ on the crowdfunding website Chuffed to help raise funds.”

At Tuesday night’s council meeting, a member of the public asked Mayor Barry Sammels whether the City of Rockingham would consider committing resources, officers’ time or funds to assist a community group to further this plan.

Cr Sammels said he could not speak on behalf of City officers but suggested groups such as HOPP or Preserve Point Peron could apply for community grants through the City.

“In relation to funding (such groups) would be eligible for community grants and are free to pursue that opportunity if they wish to do so,” he said.

HOPP is hosting a fundraising event on Sunday April 3 from 11am-3pm at Peron Park on the corner of Memorial Drive and Safety Bay Road, Peron.

The event includes live music, kids’ activities, an art auction and raffles.

“We are urging those who believe that a coastal park instead of canals would be better for the economy, the environment and the health of our community to come along and join us,” Ms Jecks said.
