Medina: police car rammed during chase

A 21-year-old man has been arrested in relation to a series of incidents yesterday.

A man entered a shop on Rockingham Beach Road, Rockingham, and stole a safe at about 2.45pm. Staff provided police with details of the vehicle he left the scene in.

At about 4.25pm, South Metropolitan Response team officers saw the vehicle on Parrot Way, Spearwood, and they attempted to stop it. Police claim the vehicle failed to stop and it will be alleged the driver rammed the police vehicle before driving away.

Officers from the Regional Operations Group saw the vehicle on Anketell Road, at about 9.10pm. An attempt was made to stop the vehicle, however it will be alleged the driver failed to stop. A number of Regional Investigations Unit vehicles were deployed to the area to assist.

While on Gilmore Avenue, Medina, the driver of the vehicle allegedly attempted to evade the police vehicles by driving into a garden. Two police vehicles were struck, receiving minor damage, and the evading vehicle then struck the wall of a house at low speed.

Police claim the driver attempted to run from the scene, but was arrested after a short foot chase. A second person was located laying on the floor in the back of the vehicle.

The driver of the evading vehicle, a 21-year-old man from Spearwood, was not able to be immediately interviewed as he appeared to be semi-conscious (not believed to be linked to the crash). He was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital, where he remains under police guard.

The passenger in the vehicle was released.
