A Fremantle Sea Rescue spokesman said four men were on a 7.3m aluminium boat eight nautical miles (14.8km) south of Garden Island.

The engine ran out and they opened the hatch to find it full of water.

The boat began sinking and eventually capsized.

Water police called the sea rescue groups and Cockburn, Rockingham and Fremantle crews assisted with the rescue.

Cockburn Sea Rescue towed the stricken vessel back to Rockingham.
