Navy crews take the challenge to ensure good blood supplies

Gabrielle JefferyWeekend Kwinana Courier

CREW from HMAS Ballarat rolled up their sleeves to ensure the community would have enough blood by readying them for a big donor challenge in September.

Able Seaman Dean Goorden organised 14 of his fellow crew to attend the Red Cross Blood Centre in Rockingham to donate blood.

They were treated to juice and biscuits after donating.

Red Cross Blood Centre Manager Susan Mungwana said blood supplies were always boosted thanks to navy personnel.

“With their donations this means we will have enough blood for hospital patients,” she said.

“Our supplies usually last just two days – they are one of our biggest supporters and we really need them.”

The crew will join other teams from the three platforms of our defence forces – the Air Force, Army and Navy – to go in the official ‘Defence Red Cross Blood Donor Challenge’ that runs from September 1 – December 8.
