Neighbours play the name game

John Dobson, Weekend CourierWeekend Kwinana Courier

Rockingham chose Kulija, a Nyungar word that means ‘in relation to the penguin, the one that is linked to and travels about this site for’ as the name of the new extension and existing 0.6km stretch of Mundijong Road from Baldivis Road to the Kwinana Freeway, in September.

The name was referred to the City of Kwinana, as a small portion is in its boundaries, but it was refused, with the council preferring the entire road be named Mundijong Road.

Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said a delegation from the City and a local Aboriginal representative attended the City of Kwinana to explain the rationale behind the requested name change and its regional significance.
