New Port Kennedy studio offers pole lotta fun

IT might not be the first idea to come to your mind when you think of doing a workout, but the launch of a new pole-dancing studio in Port Kennedy is set to offer a new challenge.

Factory Pole Fit on Saltaire Way has recently opened and judging by the level of interest shown, owner and instructor Kat Legg might have her hands full of people wanting to give ‘pole’ a go.

She said pole-dancing can be whatever you want it to be.

“The main thing is you just have to give it a go and give it a chance,” she said.

“Pole fitness can be sexy, pole fitness can be artistic, it can be anything you want it to be and that’s the beauty of it.

“It can be fitness orientated and it’s probably the only sport in the world you can make sexy.”

Although pole-dancing looks tough to get into, Ms Legg said that was not the case at all.

“The hardest thing is getting out of your comfort zone and trying something with a stigma attached. People find it kind of daunting because it is unknown territory,” she said.

“The funny thing is, after one or two sessions, your form a healthy addiction to pole because there is so much to incorporate, to remember, techniques, queues and while you’re doing it you’re working up a sweat.”

Ms Legg said pole is very different from lifting weights in a gym or running on a treadmill.

“You don’t have to look at numbers or anything, you put combinations together,” she said.

“You’ll be training for a routine so you tend to be working for hours on end before you realise it… you wouldn’t do that in a gym, you’d be like ‘ok that’s enough now’, cool down and go home.”

She said it is a hobby for anyone ranging from male to female and young to old.

“The oldest we’ve had has been 60 and she was really good, very flexible,” she said.

“I’ve taught a couple of kiddies how to pole as well, they’ve been really natural at it… we do encourage them. It’s a good way to build fitness and muscle.”

“We have one male student at the moment, he is amazing… All of our partners have given it a crack over the years and they try and show us up. They do pretty well actually.”

As for the critics, Ms Legg said she was not phased.

“As soon as they start to see, or have a go, or see photos and videos of what you do, there is just an instant respect,” she said.

Factory Pole Fit will be offering a free trial over the coming months.
