“This year in Term 1 we began scheduling regular playgroups, programs and information sessions, which have attracted diverse groups,” she said.

“Also when they were asked what they wanted at the centre and how we could assist them in their parenting, many were surprised to learn that their ideas, thoughts and opinions actually mattered.”

Ms Dean said the centre’s programs also catered for grandparents and other carers, who often played a significant role in raising children.

“It is wonderful to see grandparents and parents attending the same group,” she said.

“This intergenerational opportunity provides other benefits – sharing information, new ideas and in some cases discussing changes in parenting styles from past years to the present.

“These changes only highlight the importance we now place on investing in child development, early learning and health programs for families with young children.”

Programs scheduled for Term 3 include Playgroup to Kindergarten; Transition to School; pre-parenting sessions for first-time parents in their final trimester; Music and Movement; Story Time (in partnership with Rockingham Library); Yoga for Mums and Bubs; playgroups; and education workshops.

A Department of Health child health nurse and speech therapist are based at the centre, seeing families by appointment throughout the week.

A counselling service is also available for children and parents.

The Child and Parent Centre East Waikiki is located at the corner of Carnegie Loop and Murchison Road, Cooloongup, accessed via Grange Drive.
