A PETER Carnley student has claimed third place in the 2016 Shaun Tan Award for Young Artists lower primary category.
Five-year-old Lehansa Attapaththu’s piece Blue Crab, a water paint, texta and crayon creation, garnered acclaim from the judges who called it a sophisticated work.
Judges acknowledged her great shading and technique, and portrayal of movement and depth.
A panel of local artists, illustrators and educators, including James Foley, Pippa McManus, Daniela Dlugocz, Wendy Bray, Gary Adamson, Rita Basilio and Robyn Jeffreys, judged the award.
Mr Tan, a Perth-born Oscar award winner, said he was impressed by the high calibre of entries year after year.
“There are sheer idiosyncrasies and a quirkiness in this exhibition that you probably won’t see elsewhere,” he said.
