Plant a threat to Serpentine River

ROCKINGHAM resident Trevor Walley is concerned about a water hyacinth infestation along the Serpentine River, from Karnup to the Mandurah estuaries and waterways.

“Water hyacinth clogs up the river to recreation boating,” he said.

“It also denies the plants and fish sunlight and oxygen, killing our Aboriginal totems and life.”

Mr Walley said the water hyacinth weed could be dormant for more than 28 years.

The WA Department of Agriculture has been notified about the infestation.
