GREENS senator Scott Ludlam will announce plans to protect Point Peron when he visits Rockingham on Sunday.

Mr Ludlam, who will be accompanied by Greens candidate for Brand Dawn Jecks, said the much-loved area would be granted Bush Forever status under the recently announced Urban Forest plan.

“Bush Forever means forever, not just for now until a developer wants to disfigure it into a marina,” he said.

The plan would also see the Peel region’s tree canopy double by 2040 with the aim of ensuring every resident is within five minutes of a greenway.

Funding for the plan is expected to be around $29 million at Federal level, with a further $6.7 million from the State.

Under the Urban Forest plan, an Aboriginal Stewardship committee would also be created as well as funding for scientific mapping.

Ms Jecks said the plan would strengthen ‘Parks and Recreation’ zoning which currently offers little protection for areas should development be proposed.

“These precious places need to be protected through stronger regulations for future generations to enjoy,” she said.

The event will begin at 10am at Rockingham Esplanade on Sunday.
