Police dog Nikko finds man after police chase

POLICE dog Nikko tracked an alleged offender to an animal shelter after a police chase in Baldivis yesterday .

At about 3.20pm, Kwinana police officers on patrol attempted to stop a red Mercedes Benz on Nairn Drive.

It will be alleged the driver failed to stop and accelerated away from the police vehicle.

The vehicle was followed through a number of streets and the driver was allegedly seen abandoning the vehicle on Miller Road, Baldivis.

The driver ran across railway tracks and onto a nearby property.

Several police units including the dog squad and police air wing attended the area.

A cordon was established around the property and police dog Nikko was deployed. Despite the area being home to a number of sheep, Nikko was able to pick up a scent. The scent was tracked to an animal shelter, where a man was found to be hiding. He was challenged by the dog handler, and was arrested without incident.

A 36-year-old man from Hilbert was charged with failing to stop, reckless driving and no authority to drive, reckless driving and no authority to drive. The accused was refused bail and will appear in Rockingham Magistrates Court today.
