Port Kennedy: arson arrest

ARSON Squad Strike Force Vulcan officers have arrested a 24-year-old man in relation to a fire in Port Kennedy on December 28.

It will be alleged the fire was deliberately lit at 4.30pm and ignited in bushland beside St Bernadette’s Catholic Church, near the intersection of Strasbourg Ramble and Benbecula Loop.

The fire caused about $100,000 damage to the church.

Police claim a short time later a second fire was deliberately ignited in bushland adjacent to Pimento Circuit, Port Kennedy.

The 24-year-old Port Kennedy man has been charged with two counts of wilfully lit fire likely to injure or damage and one count each of possessing a prohibited drug; possessing drug paraphernalia and possessing stolen or unlawfully obtained property.

He is due to appear in the Rockingham Magistrates Court on January 29.

Information is critical to these investigations and Arson Squad Strike Force Vulcan officers wish to thank members of the community and fire fighting services for their support. Officers urged residents to continue to provide information as it made a difference.
