Port Kennedy man charged for lighting two fires

ARSON Squad officers have arrested a 24-year-old Port Kennedy man in connection with two fires in Port Kennedy late last month.

It will be alleged the man deliberately lit a fire about 4.30pm on December 28 beside St Bernadette’s Catholic Church, near the intersection of Strasbourg Ramble and Benbecula Loop.

The fire caused about $100,000 damage to the church.

A short time later, the man allegedly lit a second fire in bushland adjacent to Pimento Circuit in Port Kennedy.

The man has been charged with two counts of wilfully lighting a fire likely to injure or damage, and one count each of possessing a prohibited drug, possessing drug paraphernalia and possessing stolen or unlawfully obtained property.

He is due to face Rockingham Magistrates Court on January 29.

Arson Squad Strike Force Vulcan officers said members of the community were vital to making the arrest.
