Rock thrown at moving vehicle

Staff ReporterWeekend Kwinana Courier

Kwinana Police Sergeant Gavin Lang said a rock was thrown at a vehicle travelling on Gilmore Avenue, near Chisham Avenue, at about 9pm last Friday.

The vehicle’s windscreen was damaged but the driver was not injured.

Sgt Lang said police were investigating the incident. ‘We suspect it was done by a youth but we are continuing our investigation into the matter,’ he said. ‘Luckily there were no injuries. Rock throwing is very dangerous.’

Sgt Lang said rock throwing had ‘not been a major issue’ since May when a woman was hit in the eye while travelling as a passenger in a vehicle along Gilmore Avenue.

‘Things were pretty quiet during the cold months but the weather has been warmer recently and that leads to more people staying out later, which results in an increase in crime,’ he said.

‘Rock-throwing has been an issue in the past in Kwinana and it is something we regularly monitor.

‘Sometimes kids are throwing rocks at light poles but miss and it goes onto the road.’

Sgt Lang said a community effort was required to stamp out this bane of driver and community safety.

‘Parents should be aware of where their kids are at, particularly at night,’ he said.

‘We don’t get many reports of rock-throwing, so I would urge people to contact police if they see anything.’
