Rockingham cafe for people with dementia

THE City of Rockingham’s special ‘memory cafe’ for people living with dementia and their carers has helped many of them form positive lasting connections.

The Drop in the Ocean Memory Cafe is an initiative by the City in partnership with Alzheimer’s WA and Rockingham and Districts Alzheimer’s Inc.

Since April 2018, the memory cafe has given people an opportunity to gather in a friendly social setting, enjoy a warm cuppa, and chat to share experiences and memories.

Mayor Barry Sammels said the City was committed to making Rockingham a more dementia and age-friendly place.

“The Drop in the Ocean Memory Cafe has proven to be a hit with residents affected by dementia and their carers, as it provides people living in similar circumstances with a chance to create new networks based on a shared understanding,” he said.

“Living with dementia and caring for those impacted by it can be a challenging task for families, which is why the City is delighted to be able to offer residents the opportunity to connect in a friendly environment.

The Drop in the Ocean Memory Cafe meets on the third Monday of each month from 10am to noon at The Clipper Inn on Patterson Road in Rockingham.

People living with dementia and their carers are invited to a small celebration at the Clipper Inn Cafe on Monday, June 17, from 10am to noon to celebrate its first anniversary.
