“Most of us picked up an ordinary stone and discovered that you could grind it and polish it to turn it into a beautiful rock,” Ms Argentino said.

“We have faceting machines for people who want to make jewellery.

“We can melt silver and gold to make jewellery too.

“We have some very talented members, such as jewellers.”

Members often travel up north on rock digging expeditions.

“It’s absolutely fascinating and easy to get hooked,” Ms Argentino said.

There will be plenty of rocks and gems on display at the open day, including luminous rocks. For children there will be lucky dips.
