Rockingham: diver dead after New Year’s Day mishap

A MAN is dead after New Year’s Day diving accident at a popular spot on a West Australian beach.

Emergency services were called to Rockingham Beach, south of Fremantle, about midday after the man in his 20s was pulled from the water.

He was given first aid and taken to hospital but could not be revived.

Witnesses told Seven News Perth the man had been free-diving with a mask and flippers but did not have a snorkel or oxygen tank.

It is reported he’d been diving for 30 minutes but it is not yet known what went wrong.
