Rockingham epilepsy support group open

Jaime ShurmerWeekend Kwinana Courier

ROCKINGHAM has an epilepsy support group open to anyone affected by epilepsy, whether they are a carer, parent or child.

Claire Greening said one in 20 children in Australia will experience a seizure and one in 200 are diagnosed with epilepsy, with medication helping only about 70 per cent of those diagnosed.

People aged over 60 years are now the largest age group of affected Australians.

“It’s fairly common but people don’t talk about it much; there’s still a stigma,” Mrs Greening said.

“Ongoing support is vital for children and adults with epilepsy as they may face frequent and unpredictable seizures, as well as a lack of understanding in the community, at school or workplace.

“We are a drop-in group of about six families at the moment.”
