JUDO enthusiasts Simon Read, of Baldivis, and Marlee Mickle, of Rockingham, will be baton bearers for the Commonwealth Games Queens Baton Relay when it comes to Rockingham in February.

Marlee’s sister Meaghan said both were “amazing people and incredible members of the community.”

“It’s great they were both selected to participate especially from the same sport,” she said.

Mr Read, from South West Judo Academy, said one of his students nominated him and it was a “bit of a surprise.”

Mr Read was nominated for his achievements, such as teaching about 100 members of the community judo at his academy.

He takes judo students to Japan and national competitions, and is the president of the Judo Western Australia Inc, which has gone from 418 members to 800 members in three years.

Mr Read has also been a State judo coach.

Ms Mickle has been competing in Judo since she was nine. She has won gold, silver and bronze at national championships.

Mr Read, her coach, said Ms Mickle was a good all-rounder and was involved in cricket and football at school. She is now studying to become a sports teacher.
