Rockingham: shoe thief undone by DNA match on pair of thongs he left in shoebox

A MAN was re-united with his old faithfuls – a pair of thongs – after DNA results came back to bite him almost a year later.

Travis Jon Wilson pleaded guilty to stealing when he appeared at the Rockingham Magistrates Court yesterday.

The prosecutor said Wilson went to Rebel Sports at Rockingham Centre on August 28, 2016 , where he was captured on CCTV walking up to a display of basketball shoes.

He grabbed a box of shoes, opened them, took off his thongs and put on the new Nike Air shoes.

He then put his thongs in the empty shoebox and put the box back on the display.

DNA testing revealed the thongs’ rightful owner was Wilson and not Rebel Sports Rockingham.

Magistrate Gregory Smith fined him $400 and ordered he pay Rebel Sport $149 for the shoes and $88 in costs to police for looking after his thongs.
