Mr Smith was a charter member of the Rockingham Districts Rotary Club (now Palm Beach Rotary Club) in 1982.

He was also involved in newspapers in the early 1980s.

Mr Smith had property on the foreshore and instigated planning changes for the Rockingham boardwalk. His plans to develop a multistorey building mix of commercial and residential were not realised and he later sold the property.

Mr Smith retired to Mandurah with his wife Muriel in 2000.

His son Steve took over Toyotaways when Mr Smith retired.
