Severe weather warning for Rockingham and Mandurah

THERE is a severe weather warning with heavy rainfall for residents from Geraldton to Bunbury, including Mandurah and Rockingham.

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activity is expected as a middle level cloud band develops to the northwest of the warning area.

The severe weather is expected to last from late Friday night until Saturday evening as the cloud band extends southeast.

Rainfall will start initially over north western parts of the warning area and extend southeast during Saturday before easing from the northwest during Saturday afternoon and evening.

Widespread heavy rainfall totals of 30mm to 60mm with isolated falls possible in excess of 100mm may cause flash flooding over parts of the warning area during Saturday.

This weather is not typical for this time of the year and heavy rainfall may cause damage to property and make road conditions hazardous.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:

* Have an emergency kit with a battery operated radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit.

* Ensure pets and animals are in a safe area.

* Campers should find shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams.

* If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
