Sinkhole swallows trolley in Safety Bay

Rachel FennerWeekend Kwinana Courier

Trolleys in Safety Bay exist in fear after a sinkhole attempted to swallow one last week.

The large sinkhole is in the car park at the Bayside Shopping Centre at the corner of Safety Bay Road and Penguin Road.

Originally the sinkhole tried to swallow a car, but was not successful.

Reader Megan Clark sent in the photos of the sinkhole and says it has been there for a week.

The manager of IGA Safety Bay Beth Nixon said the sinkhole appeared last Sunday night.

"A car drove over it and it (the sinkhole) happened," she said.

"It's strange and I wasn't really expecting it."

The City of Rockingham has been contacted about the offending sinkhole.

Sinkholes have a history of striking fear in communities following their sudden appearance.

This is because the surface of the sinkhole usually stays in one piece until there is not enough support underneath.

Then, dramatically, a sudden collapse of the land's surface can occur.
