WHAT started out as a joke has become something much more for spud king Tony Galati, who confirmed he will nominate for the seat of Baldivis as an independent.

Earlier today, Mr Galati appeared on 6PR’s breakfast program to announce his candidacy for the seat but later announced it was an elaborate April Fools joke.

However, speaking to Adam Shand on 6PR Drive this afternoon, Mr Galati said the large amount of support he had received since making his ‘announcement’ had spurred to him seriously consider nominating.

“After today’s response and support, people have been ringing me up, it’s made me think I could do something for the community of WA,” he said.

He thinks he has a “pretty good” chance of being successful saying he would do what the people want.

“I’ll support whatever the constituents want… it won’t be my decision,” he said.

“Baldivis means a lot to us and if we can support the people of Baldivis as they support me, if I can make a change, I’d definitely have a go.”

When asked if he could handle the rigours of state politics, Mr Galati said he thought he could handle “an extra couple hours a day.”
