ROCKINGHAM has just scored the unenviable title of Perth’s ‘stormiest’ suburb according to the RAC.
The call relates to the number of storm related claims from 2017 for 10 Perth suburbs.
In fact, greater Rockingham featured in the top 10 twice – with Waikiki making number six on the list with 56 claims. Rockingham had 90 claims in total.
The list, along with the recent wild weather across Perth, prompted the organisation to call for vigilance.
RAC home claims manager, Glen Walker urged homeowners to ensure their properties were not adding to the problem.
“Between 2015 and 2017 we saw an almost 100 per cent increase in claims for storm damage across Western Australia,” he said.
Recent storms saw 1100 claims in less than a week alone.
In 2015 there were 8115 claims, 2016 had 14,509 claims and the 2017 figure nearly doubled at 15,757 claims.
“Storms often come quickly and catch homeowners off guard so our advice is to take a look around your front and back yards for any potential risks and try to minimise them as much as possible,” he said.
“Items that are most often damaged in a winter storm include fences and gates, ceilings, roofs and patios, but some simple precautions can help protect your home.
“Trim loose tree branches, hire a contractor to clear any trees surrounding power lines, secure loose outdoor objects like furniture and always keep an emergency kit handy.
“Cleaning the gutters and valley trays on your roof can save you a lot of heartache in the event of a downpour and pumping out some water from your pool helps reduce the risk of overflow.”
