Telstra upgrades Garden Island mobile coverage to 4GX

MOBILE communications on and around Garden Island just got a lot faster with Telstra upgrading the island’s mobile base station to deliver 4GX coverage.

Telstra area general manager Boyd Brown said 4GX was one of the world’s fastest mobile networks and would be most welcome by navy personnel as well as local boaties and people on Pt Peron and nearby Rockingham beaches.

“While we know the upgrade will assist our defence forces on Garden Island it will also deliver high-speed mobile internet to some local businesses, residents and tourists visiting the island or Pt Peron,” he said.

“The explosion in applications, shift towards mobile video consumption and use of mobiles in commerce means demand for connectivity continues to grow strongly.”

Mr Brown said the introduction of 4GX services on Garden Island would mean increased capacity for the local mobile network, giving locals improved and more consistent data speeds.

“This will help ensure locals to enjoy the best coverage, network reliability and consistently fast speeds as more activity, people and devices come onto our mobile network,” he said.

“The new 4GX network will supplement existing Telstra 3G network services provided in the region.”

Mr Brown said the 4GX network operates by combining two mobile spectrum bands, one of which was formerly used for analogue TV.

He said this was effective for use in regional areas as it provides excellent coverage and in-building penetration.

“It can deliver high mobile download speeds on 4GX compatible handsets often twice as fast as those typically available on an existing 4G service,” he said.
