Thefts from building sites on the rise

According to Housing Industry of Australia statistics, Baldivis and Wellard regularly rated among Perth metropolitan’s top 10 suburbs for construction site thefts last year.

Rockingham police Senior Sergeant Stuart Mearns said four units in Shoalwater were cleaned out during ‘lock-up’ stage last weekend.

‘Burglaries are occurring on newly constructed homes, which are still unoccupied with the owners having not moved in yet,’ he said.

‘Often this is happening where there are not many people living in the street, so newly developed areas are an easy target.’

He said police received about four reports a week on building site thefts in Baldivis.

‘It is frustrating for owners and an ongoing issue for police and the building industry,’ he said.

‘Valuable items are being stolen, such as ovens, windows and water meters.

‘We urge the public to keep an eye out for people entering building sites and to make note of vehicle registration details and a description of those acting suspiciously.’
