The authority’s most recent statistics, covering the five years to the end of 2012, recorded 145 accidents at the traffic light intersection ” one of Rockingham’s busiest.

The intersection also ranked as the highest based on total costs of collisions for both the cities of Rockingham and Kwinana, with an $18 million insurance and damages bill.

While ranking as the 53rd most frequent site for accidents in the State, the more than $18 million damage costs ranked as the second most expensive in WA.

In the City of Kwinana, the most frequent site for a traffic accident was the roundabout at the intersection of Anketell and Abercrombie Roads, with 81 crashes occurring at a cost of more than $4.5 million.

The most prominent cause of accidents for the Ennis Avenue and Elanora and Grange drives intersection was rear-end collisions, accounting for 97 accidents, while right-angle collisions accounted for 69 accidents at Anketell and Abercrombie roads.

A spokeswoman for Main Roads WA said the data was reviewed annually and those roads or intersections with the highest crash rankings were given priority for works.

‘Given the high level of crashes occurring at (Ennis Avenue, Grange Drive and Elanora Drive) intersection, Main Roads has undertaken works to modify the traffic signals to incorporate a right-turn movement from Grange Drive to Ennis Avenue,’ she said.
