Opinion: Census 2016 data paints picture of the average Rockingham resident

HOW would you describe the average Rockingham resident?

The latest Census statistics reveal some insights into what’s the norm in our community.

In the 2016 Census, there were 125,114 people in the Rockingham local government area.

The median age was 34. There were 33,350 families, with an average of 1.9 children.

There were 50,891 private dwellings, with an average 2.7 people per household. There were 1.9 motor vehicles on average per dwelling.

The median weekly household income was $1555. The median monthly mortgage repayments were $1950 and the median weekly rent was $350.

Of those with mortgages, 10 per cent were experiencing mortgage stress, with mortgage repayments more than 30 per cent of household income. A similar proportion experienced rental stress.

Almost half the residents aged 15 years and over were married, while 34 per cent were never married.

There were 86.4 per cent of dwellings with internet access and 11.3 per cent did not have internet.
