Baldivis teen strikes gold at GKR Karate World Champs

GIARNE Brewer (14) is the kata GKR karate world champion for her age group after she won gold at the world championships.

The GKR karate club consists of the US, the UK, New Zealand and Australia.

Giarne said she won gold for the kata, which consists of strikes, blocks and kicks. She also won bronze in the kumite (sparring).

“I didn’t expect to win anything as I was in a division of 25 people,” Giarne said.

“When I won I was astounded and over the moon.”

The talented teenager has been involved in karate for four years.

She started with her mother Sharlene, who won two gold at the world championships. “It was a family achievement,” Giarne said.

She is now concentrating on getting her black belt grading.
