THE Peel Cavaliers claimed bragging rights in the Country Championships division one on the weekend, accounting for the South West in Sunday’s final at Leederville Oval.
It was a see-sawing affair, with the lead changing on several occasions before the Cavaliers eventually settled after taking the lead at the end of the third quarter.
From there, Brad Holmes put South West to the sword in the final term, kicking three of his four goals for the day to secure the division one title 13.6 (84) to 7.11 (53).
Former Peel Thunder skipper Brendon Jones claimed best-on-ground honours in the final, beating off stiff competition from Joel Houghton, who bagged six majors.
Fellow Cavalier Jesse Gribble was named player of the division.
It marks the first time in the past 13 attempts that the shield has been taken away from Upper Great Southern and South West.
The Cavaliers went undefeated during the tournament, with wins over Upper Great Southern, Lower South West and South West guaranteeing a grand final berth.
The Colts struggled to make an impact against Regional Districts and Great Southern on Friday at Rushton Park, effectively eliminating them from contesting in the decider.
They managed to claim a win against the Northern Suns on Saturday, before finishing with a loss to eventual champions South West.
