Despite the cooler weather, the country’s best barefooters have battled it out for points this week in the adrenaline-pumping water sport.

Among the competitors is topped-ranked Aussie Brendan Paige (22).

The Queenslander turned professional at the age of 17 and now spends half the year in Australia and the other half in the United States.

‘I’m super-pumped to say this is my fifth Nationals and I’m more excited than ever to get on the water and ski against Australia’s toughest and best competitors,’ he said.

At last year’s Nationals, Paige won the top gong for the tricks category after joining the national team in 2012.

In 2012, he won bronze in the tricks category at the Barefoot Open World Championship.

Remarkably, barefooters have to travel faster than conventional water skiers to stay upright.

The finals of the competition will be held today and tomorrow.
