Matthew Beaman (14) and Isaac Da Silva (15), both of Kwinana Little Athletics Centre, have been chosen to participate in shot put and 800m track respectively.
The boys, who are good mates on and off the track, said they were excited to head over to Singapore and show the rest of the world how talented they are. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity… just the fact I’m representing WA and Australia, it’s awesome,” Isaac said.
Matthew said the trip was a reward for all his hard work over the past few years.
“All my life I’ve grown up with it (shot put), I’ve got better and better with it and also a lot taller, which helps,” he said.
The boys are also keen footballers, but Isaac said if forced to choose between the two, running would probably win.
“I’d probably go running because I’ve been brought up that way,” he said.
“Dad was a runner and after a couple of years off, this is my first year back; I’ve realised how much I love athletics.”
It will be both boys’ first time overseas and, with only two of the eight days spent in competition, they were quick to plan their downtime.
“It’s going to be great. The sightseeing is going to be good,” Isaac said.
The boys are scrimping and saving to pay for the journey to Singapore, with Kwinana Little Athletics seeking sponsorship for the talented pair.
“It would be really great to get some sponsorship to help us get there and represent our country,” Isaac said.
The boys leave for Singapore on July 12.
