SBL: Flames men get up over Hawks but women fizzle

RESULTS were split down the middle for the Rockingham Flames in the penultimate round of SBL action, with the men claiming a narrow 93-90 win over Perry Lakes, while the women suffered a loss to the fourth-placed Hawks.

The Flames headed to Floreat with the men perched fifth and needing a win to hold off the Stirling Senators, Perth Redbacks and the Hawks.

After establishing a five-point lead at the first change, the Hawks pegged it back to 45-all at the half.

However, from there the Flames fought off the spirited Hawks to claim the important three-point win.

Cooper Land led the way with 20-points with Taylor Land (19 points) and Ryan Godfrey (18 points) also proving pivotal in the win.

Chudier Pal also impressed with 16 rebounds.

The women were brave early in their match with Perry Lakes, but the absence of Darcee Garbin and Jacinta Bourne told as they fell away in the second half to allow the Hawks to run away 75-62 winners.

Ifunanya Ibekwe piled on 25-points in the loss while Sami Whitcomb supported well with 15-points.

The Flames are still second on the ladder as they prepare to take on 11th placed East Perth.

The men will also face the Eagles, who are challenging for the final spot in the eight.

A win would keep the Flames in contention for fourth place should Geraldton falter against Lakeside, but with Stirling and Perry Lakes breathing down their necks, a win is necessary to sew up a home final.
