SBL: Flames women stretch winning run to nine, but men slump to two defeats

IT was a mixed weekend for the Rockingham Flames with the women claiming two wins while the men slumped to two losses.

The women kicked the jam-packed weekend off on Friday with a 94-77 win over Perth Redbacks and less than 24 hours later held off local rivals Mandurah Magic 63-56.

Sami Whitcomb was again the star, racking up 29 points in both encounters.

The two wins stretched the Flames’ winning streak to nine, but that will be put to the test against the third placed Joondalup Wolves this weekend.

It was a poor weekend for the men however, going down 108-92 in a shock loss to the 12th placed Redbacks.

The results did not get any better for sixth place Flames after falling behind to the Mandurah Magic early in Saturday’s contest, unable to recover on its way to a close 86-83 loss.

The cellar-dwelling Magic were brave, holding off the Flames in the second and third terms to set up the morale boosting win.

It does not get any easier for the men, hosting the ladder-leading Joondalup Wolves on Friday night before returning to Mike Barnett Sports Complex on Sunday to take on the Goldfield Giants, who are hot on their heels in seventh.

Tip off for the Friday’s games against the Wolves will be 6.30pm for the women and 8.30pm for the men.

Sunday’s match against the Giants will get underway at 11.30am.
