Peel Thunderbirds players Emma Swanson and Kira Phillips are two local footballers selected to play. They were picked up midway through the draft held in May. Swanson, picked with selection 29, will suit up for Melbourne, while Phillips was taken with pick 32 for the Bulldogs .

Swanson, just 18, said she was excited to take the field with and against her idols.

‘It was a bit of a surprise to be picked but I’m definitely stoked to be playing,’ she said.

‘I’m a bit younger than most of the other girls and I wouldn’t rate myself in the top 50 players in Australia, so it was a real shock.’

Swanson said besides playing with the most talented players in the land, she would use the game to improve her leadership skills.

‘I’m really excited to get out there. I can’t wait to play with Daisy Pearce and Kara Donnellan. I met them both at the high performance academy and watched them train. They are both great leaders,’ she said.

‘I’m hoping to pick up some leadership skills of my own, as well as some stories to tell the girls back at the club. I want to inspire the younger generation coming through.’
