THE finalists for this year’s City of Rockingham Sport Star Awards have been announced, with the winners to be announced in October.

The awards, now in their 19th year, recognise outstanding members of the local sports community in categories including Club of the Year, Team of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Junior Sports Star and the coveted Senior Sports Star.

Finalists in the Senior Sports Star category, which was won in 2014 by Baldivis resident and Commonwealth Games hurdler Shannon McCann, include cricketer Dane Ugle, canoeist Brett McDonald, swimmer Holly Barratt and basketballer Darcee Garbin.

Club of the Year finalists include Peel Cricket Association A-grade premiers Singleton Irwinians and Rockingham Flames, whose women’s team is also up for Team of the Year for winning back-to-back State Basketball League crowns.

Junior Sports Star finalists include Ariana Hetherington for multiple sports, runner Matthew Ramsden and bodyboarder Brad Harrington.

“Being a finalist should make all teams, volunteers and sports people proud, as competition this year was fierce. I’m looking forward to announcing the winners next month,” Mayor Barry Sammels said.
