BUSINESSMAN Russell Poliwka has garnered the support of some of his fellow councillors for another tilt at the Joondalup mayor’s office.
The perennial candidate and Joondalup Business Association stalwart has the backing of councillors Nige Jones, Russ Fishwick and John Chester. Mr Fishwick and Mr Chester are up for re-election.
Cr Poliwka, who has been a resident of Joondalup for than 30 years, posed for a photo this week with other supporters.
Former councillor and one-time Labor and mayoral candidate Teresa Ritchie is running for a councillor post along with newcomer Renee Wingfield, managing director of circus company Fliptease.
Former JBA executive Clive Haddow is having another go at getting on the council.
In a reference to fellow mayoral candidates, including former Liberal Environment Minister Albert Jacob, Mr Poliwka said he was the only one not politically aligned.
He said he had the support for being a “fiscally responsible” mayor from the JBA, which he has been a member of for nearly 25 years.
Cr Chester, who in a previous local government election was critical of the JBA’s fielding of several candidates, backed Cr Poliwka in a testimonial.
“For the last two years I have always found Russell to be very fair – minded and respectful of other councillors’ decisions on City matters, even when making my own independent decisions,” he said.
